For Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates and Barre, the best socks are grip socks (also known as grippies, Pilates socks or barre socks). Socks that are specifically designed to provide stability, prevent slipping, and maintain hygiene on the machine. Many Reformer Pilates Studios require that all studio guests must wear grippies for both safety and hygiene purposes
There are many different qualities of grip socks and it’s important that you invest in good quality so that you feel the safety benefits as well as the sock lasting for longer.
Non-Slip Soles
-
Rubberised grips that are sticky are essential for exercises such as scooter, side planks from the footbar and skaters
-
Full-sole grip is better than just heel/toe grips for Reformer work so that you are less likely to slip
Snug, Secure Fit
-
Your shocks should stay put without sliding down - be careful some high profile brands have very slippery socks, Jellylegz pilates socks are extra snug and supportive
-
Look for styles with elastic arch support or ankle straps for extra hold. Jellylegz socks have both of these and extra thickness for additional support
Breathable Material
-
Cotton blends are great for breathability and sweat control.
-
Full-Toe Options with extra cushioning in the toe and heel are extra luxury
-
Full-toe: More coverage and warmth; good for hygiene in shared studios.
Low-Cut or Ballet Style
-
Low-cut or Mary Jane/ballet styles are common and provide good ankle mobility.
