Why do my legs shake when I do reformer pilates?

Shakey legs at Reformer Pilates?  You're worried it shows a sign of weakness?  Think again!

Leg shaking during Reformer Pilates, especially dynamic reformer pilates and Lagree is super common and generally not a bad sign—here’s what it usually means:

Muscle Fatigue

Shaking often happens when your muscles are working hard, especially in slow, controlled movements like those in Dynamic Reformer and Lagree. Your muscles (especially stabiliser muscles) may be fatiguing as they try to maintain control and alignment under resistance.  The better your form (targeting the correct muscles) and the longer your instructors keep your legs under resistance, the more chance your shakes will kick in!

Muscle Engagement and Neuromuscular Activation

Pilates works your muscles in ways they’re not always used to—targeting deep stabilizing muscles and challenging balance. Shaking can mean your nervous system is firing rapidly to maintain control and alignment. This happens more often when:

  • You’re engaging muscles you don’t typically use.

  • You’re working on one leg (single-leg footwork, side splits, scooter, etc.).

  • You’re holding a position isometrically (e.g., a static bridge or long stretch).

Weak or Underused Muscles

If you have imbalances (very common with scoliosis), certain muscles may be weaker or less coordinated. Those muscles might shake more as they’re recruited during exercises.

Stretch + Strength Combo

If you’re stretching and strengthening at the same time (like in hamstring or adductor work), the muscles might shake more from being pulled while contracting.  This would be particularly true in hardcore Dynamic Reformer, Strength Reformer and Lagree classes.

What You Can Do:

  • Breathe deeply: Shallow breathing increases tension.

  • Focus on core form: Keep alignment and engage the core properly— sometimes it could be that you need to stabilise the legs better.

  • Build gradually: Over time, your legs will shake less as strength and control improve.  If you love to be challenged then perhaps your instructors will keep challenging you to keep your legs shaking!

  • Tell your instructor: ask them to make sure that you are doing everything as you should be and
